A Game OF CHESS
In Lockdown
like many, I have been watching more television than usual and came across the Netflix series “The Queens Gambit”. A very colourful and fascinating drama about a female chess protégé. It reminded me of my childhood seeing my brother and father playing chess and me after the game using the pieces for my own games.
I remember vividly holding, handling and enjoying creating patterns and scenarios for these figures. This wander down memory lane led to me making these first drafts of chess/play pieces. Wheel-thrown symmetrical forms, that could also individually be sculptures.
With these prototypes, I think I will design a whole set of chess pieces. But also develop them as larger stand-alone sculptural shape.
